You may or may not be aware that Medway Libraries have started a regular session for those who speak English as a second language called the Conversation Café at which they get together with others and practice English in conversation.
We do not set out to teach English, only to help those who speak or are learning to speak and write English to come to terms with some of the nuances. This also applies to British customs and behaviour as will be borne out by 3 x ladies, originally from Bangladesh, who were confused about why they would be invited to Tea by neighbours but not offered anything to drink but be served a meal. A quirk?
We started Conversation Café at Rochester Library about 2 years ago and it is going very well; last month we added a regular slot at Luton Library on Tuesday afternoons between 2:00 – 4:00. These events are run by library volunteers and are geared to involve attendees in all manner of ways to encourage their use of English language.
